By now, our daughter was supposed to have already given birth to her first child. But that child is not ready to make his grand entrance yet.
When was the last time a fight brought out the good in anyone? When was the last time virtue was seen through angry words, or humility was shown in rage? These concepts are at odds with each other.
In America, we can’t be bothered with people after they’re no longer useful. We can’t be bothered with them once we have to take care of them. As they descend into the twilight of their years, we cast them off into rooms two-by-two, sheltered from the rest of the bustling world. We leave them in a cold, unfriendly, unloved place while we go about our business.
There are lots of things we shouldn’t have to do. We shouldn’t have to work for a bad boss. We shouldn’t have to deal with bad teachers or bad friends. We shouldn’t have to deal with overdue bills, late notices or fines. But the fact is, we do have to deal with these and so many more annoyances. We live here and until we go home, there are some things we just have to do.
I know what the bible says. I know what the fruits of the spirit are. I also know I tend to lack in a few, especially the patience part… oh, and the gentleness…. joy? ugh….
We think we’re so important. We think we know it all and we’re needed and nothing we do can be done without us, or at least not correctly. Don’t shake your head, you know it’s true and so do I.
Have you ever prayed and prayed for God to move you from where you are to where you want to be? Have you ever begged God to move in your life and open doors so you could work more freely for him; maybe as a missionary, or a teacher, or working in a church? Have you ever asked God why he’s taking so long, especially since you want more than anything to do Kingdom work?
There is a lot to be said for patience. How many times do we react to a situation before having the time to process it? If we’re honest, we’ll say it happens often. There is something inside us that loves to jump to conclusions, lashing out when we think we’re wronged. We even tend to raise our hands to God asking “Why?”
What are you doing when you’ve ‘had it to here?’ When is it hardest for you to be a Christian? Are you in traffic, and late…again? Is it when you get a bad meal at a restaurant and all you wanted to do was sit down and relax for an hour? Is it when you’re in a meeting and you can’t tell the boss it’s really his fault?
