We’ve all said it, we’ve all thought it. “They did it to themselves.” “They deserve it.” “If they listened to me, they wouldn’t be in this position.” Let’s stop thinking so highly of ourselves and consider this instead: what if their suffering is OUR lesson? What if the purpose of their suffering is to break you, to break me? Good grief that makes me cringe
Ever feel like life and its path is completely beyond your control? I know I do. It feels like no matter how hard I try to go down road #1, if God wants me down road #2, nothing I do will take me down the road I want to travel.
People don’t need to listen to our rendition of the covenants and whether or not we need to abide by them. They don’t care if the Old Testament counts. People don’t want to hear what we have to say, they want to see what we do. We do far more good when we use our hands, our feet and our back, than when we use our lips.
What if God only liked us? What if God decided that we were ok, we sang nicely in church and every other Wednesday, it was really nice that we fed the homeless, but ….
That man, holding the sign on the side of the road, he’s our responsibility. The mother and small children who walk through the bitter cold to get a free meal each day, they are our responsibility too. The woman, alone in the nursing home, who has long since stopped getting visitors, yup, her too.
