Jesse was so sure little David was not the one, he didn’t even bother bringing him in from the field. Why, Jesse thought, would you ever pick the runt of the litter when the stallions are before you?
It was he {Christ} who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the [...]
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
God calls us to do mighty things with the gifts and talents we have already. Typically, he won’t call a tone-deaf person to sing songs of praise and he won’t call someone who faints at the sight of blood to heal the sick. God uses our passions to do good around us.
Life has a way of getting in our way when we are trying to walk down Christ’s path. We’re told it’s ok to be mad, to be jealous, to be wanting of things only this world can give us. God calls certain people to do certain tasks. Everyone who calls Him King has a place and a duty in the Kingdom of God. Some are called to teach, others to preach. Some are called to sing and others are called to pray incessantly. Those who are called to work with prisoners probably won’t work well in the nursery and those called to pray may not make the best preachers.
Selflessness is a rare commodity these days. Not often do you see people of the world step out and do something for another wanting absolutely nothing in return. People may say all the time that they give, but it’s not giving if you expect anything in return. That’s trading.
God did not make us all the same. We have a wide diversity of gifts and talents. To some, he gave an overabundance of compassion and mercy. Others are blessed with discernment; still others have gifts of hospitality and generosity. We can and should strive to be fluent in all of these gifts; however, we cannot force them on ourselves and beat ourselves up if we are not proficient in a gift we are trying to obtain. God gives them to us as he sees fit.
