God Doesn’t Look for Superstars
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:17-19 NIV)
Have you ever thought that you’re not good enough, not educated enough, not skilled enough to serve God? Have you ever convinced yourself that you’re just not the kind of person God uses?
Have you ever thought about Peter and Andrew?
In the days of Jesus, all boys learned the Torah, the first five books of the bible, by heart. Only the best of this group went on to memorize the prophets, and only the best of those continued on to hopefully be picked as an apprentice by a Rabbi. Peter and Andrew were fishing, so they had not made the cut. They were just ordinary, hard working men trying to edge out a living in a very difficult society. Jesus, a Rabbi, approached them and said, “Come, follow me.”
They were not qualified, they were not learned enough, they probably weren’t smart enough. But God doesn’t look for superstars. He looks for everyday people whom He can use for extraordinary purposes. This way, when Peter walks on water, it can truly only be by God, because Peter certainly isn’t capable to do it on his own.
God wants us just as we are, just the way he made us, so we can serve him in such an extraordinary way that He is the only one who can claim credit.
God, here I am, a mere peasant in your sight. I am not worthy to do your bidding, but with your help, I know I can move mountains. And when I do, Lord, everyone will know it is you and not me.
